Copper Bashing for Beginners with Professional Blacksmith Lucille
Lucille Scott is an experience teacher and blacksmith who runs regular courses in the forge at Eastney Pumping Station throughout the year. (www.littleduckforge.co.uk) As a summer special she will be running 3 courses on working with copper, they follow on from each other but can be done as stand alone courses if preferred.

Copper bowls and simple copper forms
The day course will look at basic sheet metal skills including hollowing and planishing to make a simple bowl, we will then use this skill to make an object like a candle holder. To complete the main project of the day we will have to use various joining methods including riveting and soldering.

Foldforming for beginners
Working with copper we will explore the relatively new art of fold forming to create amazing textures in the sheet. Having explored the various types of folds we will work them into jewellery and small scale sculptures. This day will be a chance to let the material lead you into new forms and ideas.

This course will allow you to explore a range of techniques in the first half of the day. The hope is that you will be inspired by this and design and make a small sculpture or piece of jewellery in the afternoon using some or all of the techniques learnt.

Structure of the day:
9.30-9.45 Welcome and site orientation, e.g.where the toilets are, followed by a health and safety briefing
9.45 – 11.15 Tools and techniques. Lucille will teach you step by step various techniques for use in your main project.
11.15 – 11.45 Tea break plus discuss main projects for the day, draw up designs to scale.
11.45 – 1pm Complete experimental pieces ready to start main project after lunch.
1pm – 1.30 Lunch - bring your own packed lunch. (Microwave available)
1.30-3pm Work on projects on projects
3-3.15pm Afternoon tea break and chance to see how others are doing
3.15 – 4.30/5ish Continue work on project until finished, be aware some days can over run!
Wear old sensible clothing made with natural fibres eg cotton. It can get warm in the forge so layers are good plus if you don't mind the odd burn short sleeves are acceptable. Sturdy boots or shoes (steel toe caps are best)
